My Values

What do I value?

I had a professor recently pose these questions to our class: "What causes you to wake up in the morning? What is the first thing that gets you out of bed?"I thought almost humorously to myself, "well coffee" or "breakfast food" or "more coffee", but then seriously the thought that popped into my head was "people." I love and respect a handful of people enough in my life to strive toward building a life that honors and serves them. Those people are my parents, my close friends and those I serve in ministry. Although it isn't always easy or fun, the greatest parts of my life are fed and nurtured by the love and respect of those inner circle people.

Initially I let these questions bounce around in my head without the faintest consideration for how it relates to my values. But as I let these questions ruminate in my mind I found that the two are quite easily interlocked. What I value is ultimately what is going to motivate my days, my weeks, my career and my philosophy on ministry.

Jesus was all about people. He was after their heart, their love and His ministry came down to nothing more than serving and loving the people around Him. I believe this truth is what has convicted me to live a life that honors and serves His people through His love. Specifically I think this can be best done within the folds of ministry first and then letting it trickle into the other areas of our lives.

Values are the main motivators in your life. I am committed to allowing youth to see their fullest potential by facilitating programs that equip and encourage students to see who they are through God's eyes.

I believe my values provide anchors for who I am that then allow me to be all that God has created me to be. Empathy, faith, truth, justice and love continue to be the main motivators in my life. If I am empathetically connecting with those around me in relationship as well as showing those around me that they matter within the folds of God's family, then I believe I am living into a core pillar of my values. Along with this, faith and truth provide my life with the clear pathways to follow God and lead His people. I desire to seek after and exercise these core muscles in a manner of lifestyle. It is my belief that God is a God of justice and love, and showing these to His people is a core value of mine.

If I were to boil down this post to a simple answer to the question of: What do I value? Then I would have to say that I value God's people and showing God's people that they are valued in the kingdom of God.
